My partner and I have two children and this week, our first born turned 8!! He requested lunch at Mama San in Surry Hills and a play at Luna Park. Happy at his request we drove into the city and enjoyed a beautiful lunch, feasting on the softest of beef cheeks and popcorn fish followed by some Messina before we went back over the bridge to start an afternoon of rides and games.
I made a short little video during his birthday present hunt on the morning of his birthday and was actually quiet stoked about how well the cake turned out. Trying to be as slight and out of sight as a ninja with my videoing, the audio is actually filled with my laughing and attempting to direct my family, who wanted no part of being told what to do.
The night before Pat's birthday, together sat down at the dining table and went through at least four different cookbooks finding a recipe that ticked all of the boxes for him. The final two came down to a blood orange and rosemary cake or the chocolate fudge cake, both from the infamous “What Katie Ate” cookbook by the talented and hard working Katie Quinn Davies. Although we agreed that we should take advantage of blood orange season, he went with his gut instincts and chose the chocolate fudge cake.
Fast forward to midnight that night and I am up whipping up a storm, six eggs, two blocks of chocolate and lots of butter later there was a cake!!! This cake was super easy to make if your read the recipe and method prior to starting the bake off and I highly suggest it for the chocolate lover in your life. This cake beautifully conceals a multitude of sins, mainly being lots of butter and lots of chocolate and unfortunately it tastes delicious, so you will most likely be eating more than one slice. The full recipe is available in her first cook book.
